The Hunger Games

Book Description
Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

Excerpt from the book
The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland. Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins. – from The Hunger Games, page 18

My Review

The Hunger Games is not a book that I thought I would ever read.  It is not the type of genre that I generally enjoy, but I decided to give the book a chance.  I am so glad that I did.  Since it's a teen book it's a pretty quick read. I read it in a day and a half. I could not put it down! I have seen this book being checked out at the library a lot and never put a request in for it to read.  I seen the trailer for the movie coming out in March and thought it looked pretty interesting so I thought I would give the book a chance.  All the copies were checked out so I put my name on the list and in about three weeks it came.  I started reading it almost immediately.  Katniss is such a strong character throughout the story, you can't help but encourage her until the end. Here is the trailer for the movie coming out in March 2012.
